The DGZ executive board
Once again we would like to cordially invite you to participate in the first highlight of this year's DGZ meeting calendar, which is the
annual International Meeting of the German Society for Cell Biology. As already in 2010, it will be held at our established venue at the
University of Regensburg. You can still register for the meeting either online at
or directly on-site. You'll also
find the scientific program covering numerous timely research topics in the current pages of Cell News. We would also be very happy to
see you at our members meeting during the conference in Regensburg, where we will discuss our future plans and present the results
from the members’ election of our new executive board. While Oliver Gruss and Klemens Rottner are willing to stay in charge as chief
executive officer (CEO) and vice CEO (former “secretary”), respectively, I have the honor to follow Eugen Kerkhoff as president of our So-
ciety. I would like to thank Eugen for his continuous commitment to our society and for all his work during the successful, past two years
as president and during his previous years in the executive board as secretary. We are now very much looking forward to work with Prof.
Carien Niessen (University of Cologne), who we could convince to serve as our new vice president. In addition to her scientific CV that you
may have read in issue 3/2013 of Cell News, Carien will introduce her research interests and recent work in her lab in an article published
in the current issue.
Our meeting in Regensburg is only the beginning of an exciting year of meetings held under the auspices of the DGZ. Thus, I also would
like to take the opportunity to advert a series of special interest meetings all held at the same venue in Potsdam. The first, organized by
Dieter O. Fürst, Harald Herrmann and Rolf Schröder and held from June 10-13, will provide "Molecular Insight Into Muscle Function And
Protein Aggregate Myopathies" (MusclePAM). The second, titled "Life At The Edge" and held from July 23-26, is a forefront meeting on
"the nuclear envelope in transport, genome organization and the cell cycle". This meeting is organized by Birthe Fahrenkrog and Ralph
Kehlenbach. And finally, the "Annual Dictyostelium Conference 2014" (Dicty 2014) is organized by Carsten Beta, Sascha Thewes and myself
and is scheduled for August 3-7. The Seminaris Hotel at the Lake Templin in Potsdam has been proven in FEBS and DGZ workshops as
a very appropriate, atmospheric and reasonably priced venue for meetings of around 150 attendees. While MusclePAM and Life At The
Edge attract with an illustrious list of invited speakers, the annual Dictyostelium conference each year gathers the foremost researchers
working with this model organism. Find more information about these special interest meetings and links to their registration websites
in this issue of Cell News. Please register as soon as possible if these conferences have attracted your interest, and I can promise that we
will do our best to top your expectations!
Finally, we feel wistful that Harald Herrmann has decided to leave Cell News after twelve years as editor-in-chief. We would like to express
our cordial thanks for his outstanding commitment. It was his dedication that made our journal what it is today.
Sincerely,
Ralph Gräf (vice president)
