The year 2016 almost comes to an end and that means we can look back to a very successful international meeting in Munich and look forward to new events in 2017. Although recent international meetings were great successes in terms of attendance, science, discussion and sponsoring, the trends of the last meetings showed that DGZ members only form a small number of attendees, in contrast to meetings from many other national and international societies.
Together with the fact that it is increasingly difficult to find members to take on the organization of the international meeting, this made the board of the DGZ think about future organizations of the international meeting and of the DGZ itself: what we stand for, why we need a German Society for Cell Biology and what the Society should and can offer to its members. We further discussed these important issues with members of our advisory board. As one result of these discussions it was decided to organize, instead of the international meeting, a member meeting that is organized by and for members with new formats. It will include a general discussion on what members expect from the DGZ and what we as the executive board feel the DGZ can really offer.
Our new spring member meeting will take place in Leipzig on March 1-2 and will include 4 sessions organized by young and upcoming independent DGZ members. We will have talks selected from abstracts, a social evening, new oral digital poster presentations for all abstracts to increase interactions, the Carl Zeiss Lecture by Peter Walter, the president of the ASCB, who can also provide us with essential input from our “big” sister organization, and, finally, talks by the prize winners.
We would thus like to encourage all of our members to come and join us for this 2-day meeting and to participate in shaping the future of the DGZ!
On behalf of my fellow board members Karin Schumacher, Thomas Magin, Oliver Gruss, I hope to see many of you in Leipzig!
