PREFACE
Upcoming DGZ Meetings 2014
The DGZ will host three cell biology meetings in 2014. We will start in March (18 - 21) with the
"International Meeting of the German Society for Cell Biology 2014" in Regensburg. The meeting is
organized by the local cell biologists, Thomas Dresselhaus, Stefanie Sprunck and by myself and has an
emphasis on combining the two evolutionary separated metazoan kingdoms, animal and plant cells.
The "Annual Meeting of the German Society for Matrix Biology (DGMB)" will be held in Regensburg
in parallel with the "International Meeting of the German Society for Cell Biology (DGZ)". We have
scheduled a combined session on "cell adhesion and signalling" for Thursday March 20th, and a joint
together in the evening. The programme of the "International Cell Biology Meeting 2014 is printed in
this issue.
In addition, the DGZ will host in summer 2014 two "Special Interest Meetings". The "Molecular insight
into muscle function and protein aggregate myopathies" meeting is organized by Dieter Fürst (Bonn),
Rolf Schröder (Erlangen) and Harald Hermann (Heidelberg), and will take place at the Seminaris Hotel
in Potsdam from June 10 - 13. The second special interest meeting is organized by Birthe Fahrenkrog
(Brussels) and Ralph Kehlenbach (Göttingen). The meeting is entitled "Life at the edge: the nuclear
envelope in nucleocytoplasmic transport, genome organization and cell cycle regulation on nuclear
transport" and will be held in July (23 - 26) also at the Seminaris Hotel, Potsdam.
Young scientist support in cooperation with the ASCB
In our effort to support young scientists and also to better integrate the German cell biology into an
international network, we recently made substantial progress. In negotiations with the American So-
ciety for Cell Biology (ASCB), which were mainly conducted by our executive board member Klemens
Rottner (Bonn), we came to an agreement that the ASCB Inaugural Kaluza Prize winner (sponsored
by Beckman Coulter) will be invited to the International Meeting of the DGZ and that a poster prize
winner of our "International Meeting" will be sent to the "Annual ASCB Meeting".
Applications for "Special Interest Meetings" in 2015
In 2015 the DGZ will co-organize 1 - 3 special interest meetings. We will support these meetings
financially and provide infrastructure to organize and advertise the conferences. The decisions which
special interest meetings will be supported by the DGZ in 2015, will be made in June 2014 by the DGZ
executive and advisory board members depending on the financial situation. I hereby would like to
encourage scientists who would like to organize a meeting in 2015, to file in an informal application
to the DGZ office in Heidelberg
) by the end of May 2014.
