MEETING REPORT
Several state-of-the art technologies have found their place in
virus research that is focused around cell biological questions.
Cutting-edge imaging data were presented in several sessions,
such as cryo-tomography and live cell imaging. Furthermore,
single or dually tagged viruses, genetically modified with GFP
and/or mCherry, and approaches using direct labelling with Ale-
xa dyes of non-enveloped viruses were presented. These approa-
ches were complemented by biochemical assays such as mass
spectrometrical analysis, by RNAi technology or chemical inhi-
bitors to perturb specific pathways, and by the highly efficient
and specific mutagenesis of virus genomes. Cell based assays
were developed to decipher infection routes, high-throughput
approaches were established to identify host factors critical for
specific steps of viral propagation which can eventually be ap-
plied to develop antiviral strategies. 3D infection models allow
for detailed analysis of various molecular steps of viral infection,
provide the basis for screening of antiviral compounds under
adequate in vivo conditions thereby minimizing the use of ani-
mal models. And finally, it was demonstrated that genome-wide
antibody collections provide highly versatile toolboxes for com-
prehensive analysis of virus infections.
The presentations were well received and triggered stimulating
discussions involving several refreshing "non-expert" contribu-
tions of our invited plenary speakers. Obviously, the “cell bio-
logists” were sparked to collaborate with the “virologists” and
showed keen interest in using viral models to trace their parti-
cular cell biological research topic thus perfectly matching the
scope of the workshop. These discussions continued during the
walk through the vineyards and the wine tasting that ended in
a social evening accompanied by the excellent food of the Ket-
schauer Hof.

“Cell Biology of viral infections” Workshop 2013
“Cell Biology of metabolic processes”
Please mark your calenders for the upcoming workshop that will
take place during the famous German “Nikolaus” day from 4th-
6th of December 2013. This change from our usual September
meeting was necessary to avoid collision with the European Vi-
rology meeting in Lyon, France. As location we remain at the
Ketschauer Hof in Deidesheim, located in the beautiful surround-
ings of the Pfalz. The topic of this years workshop, is
“Cell Biology
of metabolic processes”
